Currituck sound

Where North Carolina faces the Atlantic Ocean a spit of land curves its way from north to south into the ocean. It is called the Outer Banks and it harbours small towns with such appealing names as Nags Head, Whalebone Junction, Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk.

Not densely populated the year round, the area is tremendously popular among tourists in the summer season. Millions visit the beaches to enjoy the sun.

It is a unique place to be and one senses the powers of nature that rule here. Man may settle here and start a life, it is true, but it is up to nature whether he will prevail. The region is occasionally hammered by hurricanes, but still people stubbornly hang on to their life here. Because of love for the region, undoubtedly.

At Kitty Hawk history was made at the beginning of the previous century, when Wilbur and Orville Wright made the first successful flying attempts that were to be the birth of aviation. An interesting museum on the very spot where this historic event took place takes the visitor back in time.

Currituck Sound lies to the north of the Outer Banks and it is the place where Paul Wildackers and Renate Snijders are staying during their teachers’ exchange programme.

A photographic impression.
